This summer there has been more than just reading going on at the library.

Throughout the months of June and July, weekly summer programs aimed at the county’s youth have been offered, varying from magic shows, musicians and interactive workshops.

One interactive workshop, targeted towards youth in grades 6-12, featured a comedy improv workshop that encouraged participants to perform in an off-the-cuff manner.

Led by Chris Blair of Dad’s Garage Door Theatre in Atlanta, the workshop conveyed the ideas of improvization and how it works through group activities and interactive games.

“The goal of this workshop was to teach students skills of creativity, teamwork, being able to adjust on the fly and making connections between unrelated objects,” Blair said.

Tracy Walker, youth services specialist at the library, said the summer program was offered again this year by popular demand.

“This program gives students the opportunity to have fun for free and socialize with others their age,” she said. “We are pleased to offer this program each year.”

The majority of the workshop focused on individual and group storytelling, an important aspect of improv that Blair says sparks creativity.

“Telling and making up stories is important to help kids come out of their shell and embrace creative thoughts,” Blair added. “Improv involves you driving the scene, as well as reacting to and following what you have been given.”

The great summer blowout party is planned for 4 p.m. July 22 at the library.

Programs are free and open to all school age children.
