Fireworks to light up park

Dawson Day Thunder in the Sky set for Friday

POSTED: July 1, 2009 4:00 a.m.

From live music and children’s activities to food and fireworks, Rock Creek Park is the place to be Friday night for one of the most festive Independence Day celebrations in North Georgia.

The inaugural Dawson Day Thunder in the Sky Fireworks Extravaganza, presented by Dawson Community News and the Dawson County Board of Commissioners, kicks off the holiday weekend at 5 p.m.

Dozens of local groups, businesses and residents will join in the celebration, which offers a variety of family fun, including a rock-climbing wall, face painting, dance contest and live music. Fireworks will follow at dark.

Featured entertainment is The Frogz, an Atlanta-based, six-piece band that plays a variety of dance music.

“We’re also going to have a dunk tank with some very prestigious, local characters ready to take a plunge,” said Cathy Brooks, community affairs representative for Dawson County.

Attendees can bring blankets or lawn chairs and enjoy a picnic from some of the county’s best eateries and caterers while taking in the fireworks.

“This is a first for Dawson County and our way to provide our citizens with an exciting night for the entire family in celebration of the Independence Day holiday,” said County Manager Kevin Tanner. “We hope to see a great crowd Friday night.”

Admission is free. Children’s activities, souvenirs and concessions are available for purchase.

Gates open at 5 p.m., followed by live music starting at 6 p.m. Organizers ask that attendees refrain from bringing coolers to the park.

Free parking is available at Rock Creek Park, River Park Canoe Launch and Riverview Middle School.

Free shuttle service will be provided to and from the event from off-site parking.
