Laura Geraldine Lowman Spoerl

POSTED: June 17, 2009 4:00 a.m.

Laura Geraldine Lowman Spoerl, 69, of Dahlonega, died Saturday, June 13, 2009.

She was born May 19, 1940 to the late Efford and Nelda Lowman and was also preceded in death by her brother and sister-in-law, Harold and Dortha Lowman.

Laura was a very loving and caring person.

She lived over 40 years in Pennsylvania, all the while yearning to come home to her beloved brothers, sisters, nieces, nephew, great-nieces and great-nephews.

She and Don were able to fulfill this dream in 2008.

They moved her home to Georgia, to a beautiful house in Lumpkin County, where she used her southern charm with only one request, to have a big kitchen.

She used this big kitchen to entertain many old friends, many new friends and of course her family.

Her home was one of love, grace, hugs, kisses and lots of food.

She enjoyed entertaining, listening to Don and his band play bluegrass and gospel music, crocheting and needlepoint. She and Don had traveled the world over the past 17 years, visiting several countries where she came home to tell of countless stories and a multitude of photographs for everyone to enjoy.

She enjoyed a very happy and full life. At the time of her death, she was a homemaker and an avid gardener. Previously, she had been a caregiver to many young and elderly people while living in Pennsylvania.

She was a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband, Don Spoerl of Dahlonega; children, William Douglas and Jennifer Beth Kurtz of Senoia, Laura "Sissy" Phillips of Cumming, Alan and Judy Kurtz of Feasterville, Pa.; grandson, Scout Phillips of Cumming; sisters and brothers-in-law, Ellene and LaVerne Headrick, Claudell and Howard Hinchliffe, all of Gainesville, Lorine and Doug Peck of Dahlonega; brothers and sister-in-law, Larry Lowman of Dahlonega, Jack and Tina Lowman of Murrayville; various other relatives also survive.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 16 at Bearden Funeral Home Chapel with the Revs. Troy Foster, Pete Lavelle, Ruel Martin and Jordan Reece officiating.

Interment followed in the Ebenezer Baptist Church Cemetery.

Bearden Funeral Home of Dawsonville was in charge of the arrangements.
