Church serves up gratitude, grub

Lighthouse honors those in public safety

The aroma of grilled chicken, hot dogs and baked beans filled the air Friday night at Dawson County Fire Station 1.


The cookout, organized by Lighthouse Baptist Church, honored local public safety employees for their hard work and dedication.


“We appreciate everything that they do and the sacrifices they make for the county,” said Dr. Charles Blackstock, pastor.


 “This is our way of saying thank you to them.”


The cookout also marked the 10th anniversary of the church.


“The community has been good to us,” Blackstock said. “Our church has grown so much over the years, and this is one way that we wanted to show our appreciation.”


Church member Pat Winner credited Blackstock for the inspiration to hold the community event.


“Our pastor has such a heart for first responders,” Winner said. “We want people to know that we do more for our community, and are involved in things outside the walls of the church.”


Winner added that the church is focusing this year on public safety employees, with other events planned to recognize them and their families.


The church is offering a day camp June 22-25 for children ages 5-12. Cost is $50, but first responders can enroll their children for free.


“We are also having an Independence Day Patriotic Service on July 5, in which all first responders will be recognized and will receive a free gift,” Winner said. 


“The service starts at 11 a.m. A free cookout will follow and we will have activities for adults and youth.”
