ASK THE EXPERTS

Library has summer programs for everyone

POSTED: May 27, 2009 4:00 a.m.

Express yourself and be creative at the library this summer through the Chestatee Regional Library System Vacation Reading Program.

The program will take place June 1 through July 31.

A two part program, children can earn points for each 15 minutes they read to have a chance for winning a grand prize worth 50 points, and interactive workshops and shows for children will also be offered as part of the program.

“One of our main goals with the program is to keep kids reading over the summer,” said Tracy Walker, youth services specialist at the Dawson County Library.

“Research shows that children who read over the summer are able to maintain skills they worked so hard to master during the school year,” Walker added.

Children can register for the program anytime, and  it’s free and open to children of all ages.

According to Walker, the more books you read the more prizes you can win.

Back by popular demand, the library will also have a summer adult reading program.

The self-paced reading program allows participants to read the books of their choice and earn a certificate and a chance for the grand prize.

As the second part of the program, weekly shows on Wednesdays at 11 a.m will be held for children from birth to fifth grade, and interactive workshops on Wednesdays at 4 p.m. will be held for sixth through twelfth grade students.

The children’s shows will feature musicians, magicians, storytellers and more.

Teen activities will include an improv workshop, murder mystery and several others.

Walker noted that helping children to have fun while they read is also a goal of the library.

“This program gives students the opportunity to have fun for free and socialize with others their age. We are pleased to offer this program each year,” she added.
