ASK THE EXPERTS

Team goes undefeated

9 &10-year-olds finish season 10-0

POSTED: May 19, 2009 4:15 p.m.

Thursday put a cap to an undefeated season for the 9 and 10-year-old baseball team of Head Coach Jeff Cantrell.

The team finished the season with a perfect 10-0 record after a 17-4 win last week.

Offensively, the team was amazing, scoring 156 runs, while only giving up 33 runs for the season.

“This was such a good group of kids,” said Cantrell. “We have excellent parents who let the coaches coach. We never had a player, or parent, question what we were doing a single time during the season.”

Cantrell has been coaching park and recreation baseball since he was 18-years-old. This year marked his 22nd coaching a team.

“This is the first undefeated team I have been involved in since I started coaching in Dawson County. This team made a commitment to play well and they did,” Cantrell said.

“The players wanted to learn. They would show up at 3:30 for a seven o’clock practice. They were not forced to be there. The players just wanted to play ball and were eager to learn. These guys got better throughout the year,” he added.

Connor Bearden had a great year from the pitchers mound. He recorded 97 strike outs. Bearden was joined by teammates: Parker Cantrell, Seth French, Tanner Hunt, Joey Flowers, Carson Weatherford, Cade Perry, Dustin Ray, Colton Purvis and Hunter Adams in posting a perfect season.

Most members of the team will now move on to All-Stars, which will begin practice next week.

Cantrell remarked: “I have never been around a better group of players who just wanted to get better.”
