Dawson County Appraiser Kurt Tangel last month was awarded the state’s highest designation for an appraiser.

Tangel received the Appraiser Four designation on June 25, following completion of a final exam covering a series of components. The cumulative series encompasses the various methods of evaluating property, management, statutes and relationships between government and citizens.

Tangel spent the last 30 months traveling across the state to classes offered by the Department of Revenue, which awarded the certification.

“This is the highest level of competence for a field appraiser in the tax assessor’s office certified by the state of Georgia,” said Board of Assessors Chairperson John Stegall.

The certification is “very competitive and it’s quite an achievement.  “There are not that many Appraiser Fours around,” he said.

In addition to enhancing Tangel’s eligibility to become a chief appraiser, “Having the certification will better prepare Kurt to handle the growth of the county as we get more complex properties that have to be appraised,” Stegall said. “He will have the background to do that.”

Tangel is the first appraiser on the Dawson County Tax Assessor’s staff to receive the prestigious Appraiser Four certification, which exceeds the requirements of the state based on number of parcels in the county, according to Chief Appraiser Clarence Brown.

“I know I’ll be able to provide better, all-around service to our citizens—better than before,” Tangel said.

Tangel attended high school in Barrow and Gwinnett counties, and holds both a real estate license and a fee appraiser license.

He has been on the Dawson County Tax Appraiser’s staff as a field appraiser since January 2006.
