Family mourns father

Man dies in fall at San Antonio hotel

POSTED: May 6, 2009 4:00 a.m.

Friends and family are mourning the loss of a Dawsonville father of four who died early Saturday in an accident at a Texas hotel.

Authorities say James “Jim” Almon Weatherford Jr., 49, fell from the seventh-story walkway of the Omni La Mansion Del Rio in San Antonio about 1:30 a.m.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Friends of the family said the trip was an early birthday present for Weatherford, who would’ve turned 50 on May 26. He and his wife, Marcy, had met up with friends from the area.

Jimmy Holguin, chief investigator for the Medical Examiner’s Office in Bexar County, Texas, said Tuesday the incident had been ruled an accident. The cause of death was multiple blunt force injuries.

Jim Weatherford was president of Uromed, an Alpharetta-based medical supply company. According to his obituary, he enjoyed spending time with family, boating and cheering for the Auburn Tigers.

Family friends said he will be remembered for his generosity, moral leadership and dedication to God and his family.

“He was an excellent, devoted and loving father and husband,” Melinda Scully said. “He treated his friends with the utmost respect and was the type of guy that would do anything for you.”

Scully’s husband Michael said Weatherford was an all around great guy and family man who will truly be missed.

Lisa Perry, an administrator with the Dawson County School System, knows the Weatherford family through their involvement in youth sports.

“He was very supportive of his children and was very involved in their lives,” Perry said. “His children are all wonderful, which I know is a direct reflection of the type of father that Jim was.

“My heart goes out to the family. He is truly going to be missed.”

In addition to his wife and four children, other immediate survivors include his parents, James Almon Weatherford Sr. and Darlene Boatwright Weatherford of Phenix City, Ala.; and two siblings.

The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. tonight at Browns Bridge Community Church in Cumming, where funeral services are scheduled for 10 a.m. Thursday.

Interment will follow at Sawnee View Gardens Cemetery.
