Elliott racing in Atlanta

Many residents likely to make trek to track

Dawsonville race fans will get a chance this weekend to see their hometown driver make his Atlanta Motor Speedway debut as the Nationwide Series arrives for the Great Clips 300.

In celebration of 18-year-old Chase Elliott's first career NASCAR Nationwide race at the venerable track, local fans can sign up for a special seating section, "Chase's Crew."

Those who buy the $30 tickets will be seated together in the Champions Grandstands to cheer on Elliott, who drives the No. 9 NAPA Auto Parts Chevrolet.

Dawsonville Councilman Chris Gaines went even further, organizing a bus to take fans to the race. It filled up quickly.

"When the announcement [about Elliott] was made [in July at the Georgia Racing Hall of Fame], I was present ... and saw the local excitement," he said. "I decided to put a bus together to make it easier for local fans to see their hometown hero."

According to Gaines, the bus will leave Dawsonville at 11 a.m. and arrive at the speedway, where passengers will enjoy a signing session with Elliott, among other activities.

"I can't wait for the race this Saturday. I'm really looking forward to riding the bus and getting to party with other Chase Elliott fans," said Dawsonville Mayor James Grogan. "I feel like I'm back in high school riding the bus to a big game."

Elliott placed third in the Aug. 22 Food City 300 NASCAR Nationwide series race at Bristol Motor Speedway.

The top-three finish, his 10th top five of the season, gives him in a 13-point lead over teammate Regan Smith in the standings.

"We are looking forward to getting to Atlanta next week," Elliott said. "I'm excited about racing near my hometown and near NAPA headquarters."
