Middle schoolers ready for season

POSTED: August 26, 2014 3:25 p.m.

After Thursday's 26-22 scrimmage game win over Chestatee Middle School, it looks like Coach Benjy Edwards' team is ready for the season to begin.

Dawson County opened the scoring with a 10-yard touchdown run from Luke Smith late in the first quarter.

Just before halftime the Tiger defense forced a Chestatee turnover deep in their own territory on the 10-yard line. On the first play from scrimmage Smith once again crossed the goal line to give the Tigers a two-score advantage.

In the third quarter a bad snap from the Chestatee center sailed over the quarterback's head. Luke Smith scooped up the ball and raced 50-yards for the third score.

The last Tiger touchdown came on a pass from quarterback Trey Pruitt to Ryan Glass. Glass hauled in the pass and raced 60-yards for the score.

"As a whole I thought we played pretty good. We definitely still have things to work on. We turned the ball over a couple of time and missed some crucial tackles that allowed them to score," Edwards said.
He also praised the play of several of his players.

"Luke Smith looked good on offense. Justin Butler blocked good at guard and played good at defensive end. Robert Hudgins and Robbie Rarick played great at the two middle linebacker's spots," Edwards said.

"The kids played great. It was hot so we rotated a lot of kids and they stepped up for us. I am especially proud of the defense for causing three crucial turnovers."

The Tigers will open up with a trip to Dahlonega to face rival Lumpkin County at 5 p.m. tomorrow.

"We will treat it just like any other game. We will prepare the kids the best we can and give it all we have. We are going in blind because we have not played Lumpkin since I have been coaching," Edwards said.
