Fireworks set for Friday

POSTED: July 2, 2014 4:00 a.m.

Atlanta Motorsports Park and the Dawsonville Downtown Development Authority are gearing up for a full day of family fun as part of the "Sparks in the Motorsports Park" on July Fourth.

Seanie Zappendorf, secretary of the authority, said there will be a triathalon and "four jumping houses, one for younger kids and three for older kids, a dunking booth and karting all day, from 1 to 8 p.m."

"Before the fireworks kick off, we will also be holding a bike parade," Zappendorf continued. "Kids will be able to decorate their bikes or big wheels to be part of the parade."

In conjunction with the activities, Zappendorf said that there will also be plenty of food vendors from local restaurants and caterers.

According to Zappendorf, three areas will be set aside for parking.

"The first will be the grass section to the immediate right of the gates," she said. "When that fills up, we will be using the helicopter pad for parking, as well as the gravel area across from the garages for overflow."

Once the fireworks are over, Dawson County Sheriff Billy Carlisle said two lanes will be coming out of the motorsports park.

One lane will be directed left onto Hwy. 53 and the other will go right onto Duck Thurmond Road.

The Duck Thurmond traffic will travel to Sweetwater Juno Road, where motorists can then turn in either direction.

Officers will be posted at the entrance of the motorsports park, Hwy. 53 and Duck Thurmond Road and at Duck Thurmond and Sweetwater Juno roads.

In case of inclement weather, Zappendorf said the plan will be to hold the event Saturday at the same time.

"This is our celebration of our freedom," said Mayor James Grogan. "The DDA stepped up and volunteered to try to put the program together. I think it's a great thing and hope the community comes out to support it."
