Fireworks a ‘go’

City to continue annual event

POSTED: June 11, 2014 4:00 a.m.

A Fourth of July fireworks spectacular will still go on, according to city officials.

Dawsonville's Downtown Development Authority stepped up to host a community fireworks celebration after a similar event held by the local parks and recreation department was canceled.

Mayor James Grogan said the fireworks show will take place July 4 at Atlanta Motorsports Park, a private car track about eight miles west of Dawsonville on Duck Thurmond Road, off Hwy. 53.

"The DDA is putting this on in conjunction with the motorsports park," Grogan said. "AMP volunteered their property for us to be able to have this kickoff for our new DDA."

"Sparks in the Motorsports Park" is scheduled to run from 1 p.m. to around 10 p.m., with activities available for the entire family, including a 4-mile run around the track.

"When [Fivestar NTP owner] Lowell [Starr] mentioned to me that Dawson County Parks and Rec had canceled their fireworks and he heard of this great run under the fireworks, I wanted to do my part as one of the newer residents in Dawson to keep that tradition going and make this fun idea become reality," said DDA Secretary Seanie Zappendorf.

The event is open to the public.

"This is our celebration of our freedom," Grogan said. "The DDA stepped up and volunteered to try to put the program together. I think it's a great thing and hope the community comes out to support it."
