Elliott runs fifth at Dover

Picks up sixth top five finish of the season

POSTED: June 3, 2014 5:13 p.m.

Dawsonville's Chase Elliott trimmed the points lead held by JR Motorsports teammate Regan Smith in Saturday's Buckle Up 200 NASCAR Nationwide Series race at Dover International Speedway.

Smith holds a 22 point lead over third place Elliott, who ran to his sixth top five finish of the season, and is four points ahead of second place Elliott Sadler.

Kyle Busch led a race-high 124 laps to capture his record 66th career Nationwide Series win.

Trevor Bayne, Joey Logano, Matt Kenseth and Elliott rounded out the top five.

"It's a little frustrating for us today. The difference was Kyle just did a better job getting back to the front, as we were on the same strategy as him," Elliott said. "That was a huge difference maker."

He said it was a lesson learned that will better prepare the team when the series returns to Dover in the fall.

"We'll be better prepared in the fall race when it counts. I've got to do a better job getting around cars on this race track. Once that happens we'll be just fine," he said.

Holding his own against the veteran Sprint Cup drivers, Elliott led the first 18 laps, taking the lead on lap one, after dominating the two practice sessions on Friday and starting on the front row.

He was running out front when the first caution of the day came out. After taking four tires, Elliott restarted fifth on lap 25.

The final restart came with 42 laps to go with Elliott in fifth. He made a move to the inside of the No. 20 car of Matt Kenseth, but was unable to make the pass.

The Nationwide Series is off this weekend, but returns to competition at Michigan International Speedway on June 14.
