City discusses 2014-15 budget

POSTED: May 21, 2014 4:00 a.m.

With the 2014-15 fiscal year fast approaching, the city of Dawsonville has unveiled its potential operating budget.

"We're just about where we were last year on the budget," said Dawsonville Mayor James Grogan. "It's pretty much the same as last year's."

The spending plan for the upcoming year is projected to be about $2.6 million, the same as in 2013-14.

"As far as our overall, we are running a similar budget from last year. We've pretty much stayed even in all of the categories of incoming revenue and expenses," said City Clerk Bonnie Warne. "We've only increased about $15,000."

Monday night's work session was the first public discussion of the budget for the upcoming year.

"Right now, it's the first draft for FY '14-15 and this is only the first viewing, so we still have two more readings before the adoption," Warne said.

It was the second set of financial talks the city has had in May, having passed a resolution to not levy taxes for city residents this year, during its May 5 meeting.

Landowners in Dawsonville must pay county property taxes, but the last municipal levy was more than 30 years ago, according to city records.

There has been no change since then to that approach, aside from any fluctuations residents may have experienced when the county reassessed property values.

The first reading of the upcoming budget will be held during the city council's June 2 meeting. The second reading, public hearing and vote is set for the June 16 work session.
