Soccer program celebrates season

The Dawson County High School soccer teams held their end of the season banquets yesterday at First Baptist Church of Dawsonville.

Both teams are coming off very successful campaigns.

The girls' team finished the season with a 13-3-2 overall record and were Region 7-AAA runners-up behind Buford.

Head Coach Jed Lacey's Lady Tigers reached the Sweet 16 before being defeated by St. Pius X 1-0.

St. Pius went on to win the Class AAA State Championship by defeating Blessed Trinity, 1-0, on Saturday.

It was the third straight year that the Lady Tigers have reached the state playoffs and the second year the team has advanced to the Sweet Sixteen level.

The Lady Tigers were ranked as high as No. 2 in the state coaches poll at one point during the season. The final poll had the team ranked No. 7.

Dawson County's girls' team tied the school record with fewest number of losses at three. The team broke the school record with fewest goals allowed with 12.

Junior goalie Anela Melton broke the individual record for shutouts with 10 on the season.

The team was undefeated at the Tournament of Champions in Jekyll Island for the second year in a row.

Awards were presented by Lacey and his staff.

Award recipients were: Rising Tiger Award - Lydia Blythe; New Comer of the Year - Ava Walker; Best Support Player - Jessica Chambers; Coaches Award - Mckay Shively; Iron Tiger Award - Tina Libao; Defensive MVP - Devon Coates; Offensive MVP - Taylor Bennett and MVP "Golden Boot"- Anela Melton.

The boys' team was also very successful this season.

The Tigers finished with a record of 15-3 and 6-1 in region play. Dawson County was crowned region champion for the first time in school history.

Lacey's squad has made the state playoffs six of the last seven years.. This season the team reached the Sweet Sixteen before being defeated, in a classic game, by St. Pius X, 2-1, on penalty kicks.

St. Pius X defeated Oconee County, 2-0, on Saturday to capture the State Class AAA championship.

This year's team broke the school record with 15 wins and tied for fewest number of losses with three.

Goalie Brooks Fulford broke the school record with fewest number of goals allowed with 14.

Junior Brandon Lund now holds the school record with 22 goals for the season and tied the assist record with 15.

For the second year in a row, the team also finished undefeated at the prestigious Tournament of Champions at Jekyll Island.

Winning awards at this year's banquet were: Rising Tiger - Ty Anglin; New Comer of the Year - Timothy Moody; Best Support Player - David Velasquez; Coaches Award - Ben Leaver; Iron Tiger - Brooks Fulford; Defensive MVP - Austin Stewart; Offensive MVP - Cole Edwards and MVP "Golden Boot" - Brandon Lund.

The end of the year coaches' poll had the Tigers' team ranked No. 4 in AAA.
