Summerour achieves rank

POSTED: May 21, 2014 4:00 a.m.

Riverside Military Academy senior cadet Harrison Summerour has achieved yet another career landmark during his schooling.

Summerour was recently promoted to the rank of Cadet Colonel, one of the few in the history of the academy, according to Riverside officials, due to his "outstanding leadership of the Corps of Cadets and excelling all-around at Riverside."

Summerour's surprise promotion was presided over by Lt. Col. Kevin Jarrard and Col. James Benson.

The promotion follows Summerour's acceptance into the United States Air Force Academy after being selected as Principal Nominee by Congressman Doug Collins as his first choice overall.

Each member of Congress can nominate up to 10 candidates from his or her district for consideration to Military Service Academy vacancies.

During summer 2013, Summerour was accepted to the Summer Leaders Experience at the United States Military Academy - West Point, the United States Naval Academy Summer Seminar and the United States Air Force Academy.

Summerour chose to attend the USNA program in Maryland and the USAFA program in Colorado during June and July. Only the most qualified applicants gain acceptance to these prestigious leadership programs where they gain first-hand experience of cadet life at a U.S Military Service Academy.

The son of Mark and Charise Summerour, of Dawsonville, he is a boarding cadet at Riverside where he serves as the Battalion Commander for 450 young men in the Corps of Cadets.

He participates on the varsity football and wrestling teams, and he's chairman of the RMA Honor Council, a member of the National Honor Society and a peer-elected member of Riverside's Horton Society.

On Aug. 5, 2013, he completed his Federal Aviation Administration solo flight.
