Elliott runs second at Richmond

Leads by 19 points

POSTED: April 29, 2014 5:02 p.m.

Dawsonville's Chase Elliott continues to lead in driver points after Friday night's second place finish at Richmond International Raceway.

He currently stands 19 points ahead of teammate Regan Smith in his chase for the NASCAR Nationwide Championship in his rookie season.

"Overall it was a decent race for us. From where we started the race to where we ended up, I was really proud of that. There were a lot of positives to take away from tonight, especially a JRM teammate getting to victory lane," he said in a release.

Kevin Harvick, who led 202 of 250 laps, took the checkered flag. Elliott's second place finish gave JR Motorsports its first 1-2 finish.

With Harvick's win, JR Motorsports has been in victory lane the last three races after Elliott had back-to-back wins at Texas and Darlington in the No. 9 NAPA Auto Parts Chevrolet Camaro.

"We have to step up. When your teammate goes to victory lane and beats you while driving the same cars, it's really up to me to get the job done," Elliott said. "And I don't feel like I did that to the best of my ability tonight. I just got to step up next time."

The Nationwide Series heads next to the Talladega Superspeedway with practice for the Aaron's 312 at 3 to 4 p.m. and 4:30 to 6 p.m. Friday and Coors Light Pole Qualifying at 6:40 p.m. on FOX Sports 1.

The race airs at 3 p.m. Saturday on ESPN.
