ASK THE EXPERTS

Rabies clinic is Saturday

POSTED: April 23, 2014 4:00 a.m.

Low cost rabies vaccinations are available Saturday at various locations across the county.

"It is important to vaccinate your pets not only for their protection but more importantly for the general population," said Veterinarian Ed Holton, one of two local doctors participating in the clinic.

Sponsored by Dawson County 4-H, clinic locations include Burt's Pumpkin Farm from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. and at the Dawson County Courthouse from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. for Holton.

Veterinarian Steve Landreth will be at Kilough Elementary School from 8:30 a.m.-1 p.m.

Georgia is among many states that require all dogs and cats to be vaccinated for rabies.

While the local 4-H rabies clinic only vaccinates dogs and cats, farm animals and horses can also be vaccinated for rabies, according to Holton.

"North Georgia has recently been an area that has had a large number of positive rabies cases. This is particularly true in Hall County. Rabies vaccination is proven to be very safe for your pets," he said. "Pets rarely have vaccine reactions or discomfort."

Rabies shots are $10, and additional yearly vaccinations are available during the clinic.

An annual clinic is a fundraiser for the local 4-H program, participating vets donate half of all monies collected for rabies vaccinations to the 4-H program in Dawson County.
