Wreck claims life of local teen

POSTED: March 11, 2009 4:19 p.m.

A Dawson County teen that was ejected from his car Tuesday afternoon died Wednesday from injuries sustained in the crash, according to Dawson County Coroner Ted Bearden.

Jake Fausett, 16, was traveling north on Hwy. 136 on his way home from school Tuesday when he lost control of his car and left the roadway.

Fausett, who authorities said was not wearing a seat belt, was airlifted to Atlanta Medical Center.  No other vehicles were involved. Authorities on the scene said speed appeared to be a factor.

Fausett, a sophomore at Dawson County High School, participated with the school’s cross country team and the choral group.

“The choral group was really upset this morning,” said Dawson County School Superintendent Nicky Gilleland. “They were scheduled to go down to sing at the capital and Jake was supposed to be with them.”

"Jake was a great kid with a great sense of humor. The kind of kid I really like working with, his mind was working all the time," said Dawson County High School Principal Wayne Chelf.

According to Gilleland, both the high school and Robinson Elementary School (where Fausett's mother is principal) will have counselors on hand Thursday to help students and faculty members cope with the loss.

Fausett is survived by his mother and father Randy and Roxanne Fausett, of Dawsonville, and older brother Zachery. Various other relatives also survive.

Fausett’s death marks the second teen traffic fatality in two weeks in the county.

On Feb. 23, Tyler Hutchison, 18, of Dawsonville, was killed when he was ejected from a vehicle on Coltrane Road. He also, according to authorities, was not wearing a seat belt.
