DCHS students sweep competition

POSTED: April 2, 2014 4:00 a.m.

Students from the Jobs for Georgia's Graduates organization at Dawson County High School swept two competitions last month to claim the top place in multiple fields.

On March 17, students participated in the Jobs for America's Graduates regional competition at the Everest Institute in Marietta.

Eight of DCHS' students competed against 30 other students in six different areas of expertise.

The high school took home first place in five of the six disciplines.

"They were phenomenal people," said JAG spokesperson Jamie Floer. "These young people were amazing. I don't think I've ever seen anyone do this well in one go."

According to Floer, JAG prepares high school students for jobs and secondary education. The service, provided through a partnership with the United States Department of Labor, allows students to build the skills necessary to get jobs and gives them practice for interviews.

Following the March 17 competition, the DCHS team moved on to the JAG state competition on March 24 in Macon.

At state competition, the high school won first place in two divisions and second in two others, with Terry Barrow placing second for "Decision Making Skills," Brittany Horton, Suzanne Eckert, Luis Miranda and Jacob Miller receiving first place in "Creative Problem Solving," the team as a whole placing first in their Career Manual and second place for their Community Service Project at ABBA House.

"This is a phenomenal win for Dawson County High School," Floer said of the state awards. "You very rarely see students sweep a competition like this and these young people did an amazing job."
