A convenience store clerk is being held without bond after authorities say he was caught selling synthetic marijuana, commonly known as Spice, from his vehicle at work.

Dinesh K. Ramasamy, 28, of Dahlonega was arrested Friday and charged with four counts of felony distribution of a controlled substance.

As of Tuesday afternoon, he remained in Dawson County Sheriff's custody.

According to arrest warrants, the alleged transactions took place in late January outside Sanky's at Ga. 400 and Hwy. 53.

"We believe the owner was not involved and had no knowledge that this was going on," said Sheriff's Capt. Tony Wooten.

The contents have been sent to the state crime lab for evaluation.

In 2010, Georgia became the first state to ban the drug commonly known as K2 or Spice, which consists of chemically-treated spices that when smoked mimic the effects of THC in marijuana.

Synthetic marijuana is on the Schedule I controlled substance list along with heroin, above drugs such as cocaine and opium, which are listed as Schedule II narcotics.

In March 2012, Gov. Nathan Deal signed a subsequent law that bans all forms of synthetic marijuana.

"Now that it can't be sold in stores, people are trying to sell it under the table," Wooten said. "We treat the synthetic drug like any other illegal drug."
