ASK THE EXPERTS

Charity basketball game is Saturday

POSTED: October 2, 2013 4:00 a.m.

Events during the next two weekends will benefit the family of a local lawman whose mother passed away suddenly.

Jane Goodie, the mother of Dawson County Sheriff's Capt. Ray Goodie, died on Aug. 31.

Having no life insurance, the family was forced to take out a loan to cover burial expenses.

To show their support for a "brother in blue," coworkers and friends organized several events to help the family in their time of need.

The first is a charity basketball game on Saturday at Dawson County High School.

The mini tournament will begin at 11 a.m. when the Dawson County Office takes on officers from Lumpkin County. The winner of that game will then play the Forsyth County Sheriff's Office.

Admission is $5 and concessions donated by Chick-fil-A and Little Caesar's will be available to purchase.

A second event Oct. 12 will also raise funds for the family.

Registration for the Jane Goodie Memorial Ride will begin at 9 a.m. with kickstands up at 11 a.m. for a police escorted motorcycle ride that should last about an hour.

The cost is $25 per rider and $10 for passengers. After the ride, Across the Wide and Exit 13, bands based out of Cumming, will perform in the parking lot of the Dawson County Government Center, where the ride will begin and end.

Concessions and vendors will be on hand after the ride.

Capt. Goodie said he would like to thank everyone who called, took food to the family, offered support and are willing to help out with the upcoming events.

"I would like to express my appreciation for all of their help," he said.

A rain date for the memorial ride is set for Oct. 19.
