As a way of ending Exceptional Children's Week with a celebration, the Dawson County school system held their annual art contest to close out the week of awareness.

Each year, the system designates a week as Exceptional Children's Week, designed to bring students together and raise awareness in students about Americans with, and who have overcome, disabilities.

The art show was held on March 14 at the Dawson County Library. With more than 175 entries, judges had to narrow down the entries to 25 winners.

On hand to evaluate the submissions were: Board of Education Member Doris Cook; Hershel Bennett, director of special education for Dawson County; Betty Ann Bearden, administrative secretary for special education; Teresa Worley, administrative secretary for assistant superintendents; and newspaper columnist and retired educator Helen Taylor.

"Congratulations to all of the children who participated in celebrating Exceptional Children's Week with an entry," said event organizer Pam Gross. "Their hard work has been admired and appreciated."

Entries are on display at the Dawson County Library until after spring break, with the winning entries on display at the Dawsonville Municipal Complex.

The participants will be recognized by receiving certificates and medals at their respective schools, as well as a special recognition during the April 14 Board of Education meeting.
