ASK THE EXPERTS

Assistant superintendent named

Brown to fill Porter’s current position

POSTED: March 11, 2009 4:00 a.m.

Former Dawson County High School Principal Rick Brown will soon be working in the Dawson County School System again.

Appointed as the assistant superintendent of curriculum and instruction during Monday’s board of education meeting, Brown will fill Keith Porter’s position when Porter takes over as superintendent July 1.

“I am very excited to have Mr. Brown back as part of the Dawson County School System,” said Porter.

“Under his leadership and through the outstanding efforts of our faculty and students, Dawson County High School was able to achieve some of the highest awards offered to schools during his tenure as principal.”

During the meeting, Porter said Brown comes back to Dawson County with an administrative record indicating great success as an educational leader.

“As a principal in both Alabama and Georgia, his schools have consistently shown tremendous increases in student achievement,” Porter noted.  For the past two years, Brown has been working as the director of secondary schools and curriculum in the Walton County School System.

“His curriculum and instruction experience from Walton County will serve him well in his position with our system,” Porter said.

A resident of Dawson County, Brown resigned after five years as Dawson County High School principal to take a position in Walton County in order to come closer to his career goal of becoming a school system superintendent.

“I just want to make sure everyone understands this is not about being unhappy,” said Brown upon his resignation. “There is not a better school in Georgia than Dawson County High School. This is strictly a career change.”

“I am very excited to be back. It feels like I never left,” Brown said Tuesday.
