Head Coach Jed Lacey has his Tiger soccer team playing great defense. It was evident last week as Dawson won over White County, 7-0 and Gilmer County, 2-0.

With the two wins Dawson is currently 3-2 overall on the season.

On Friday, Feb. 20, the Tigers controlled the entire game against visiting White County High School. Senior goalkeeper Dane Trosterud was magnificent, as he produced his first shutout of the season.

Trosterud stopped all 10 shots from the Warriors offense.

The Tiger defense had a great game. Seniors David Scully, Evan Weatherford, Cody Tobias and sophomore Ethan Brown were brilliant in keeping White County (1-4) away from the goal.

Junior Brendan Guest got Dawson on the scoreboard with the first goal.

Senior Josh Bolz and freshman Tyler Freeman added the next two goals. It was Freeman’s second goal of the season.

However, Mauricio Escobar was the offensive star for Lacey’s team. Escobar, a sophomore, scored a hat trick (three goals) for the Tigers.

The scoring ended with junior Alex Cote hitting a shot past the White County goalie. The score came from a penalty kick with only four seconds remaining in the game.

Last Tuesday, Gilmer County came to Tiger Field to take on Dawson.

Gilmer came into the game with a 0-1-1 record. The Bobcats proved to be a tough opponent with some stingy play on defense.

Alex Cote finally got Dawson on the board with a goal from 17-yards out with only 16:34 remaining in the first half.

Cote added another goal 6 minutes later to make it 2-0 at halftime.

Cote is Dawson’s leading goal scorer with seven goals on the season.

The two goals were all the Tigers needed. Both defenses stiffened and did not allow any goals in the second half.

“I thought the defense by David Scully, Ethan Brown, Evan Weatherford and Cody Tobias did an outstanding job,” Lacey said.

Last Friday’s game against Creekview was cancelled due to the weather.

Friday, Dawson has a big area game against Rabun County.

Last season the Tigers defeated Rabun 5-0.

Kick-off will be at 7 p.m. at Tiger Stadium.
