ASK THE EXPERTS

Earthquake felt by a few

POSTED: February 19, 2014 4:00 a.m.

Local residents were somewhat rattled Friday night by an earthquake in South Carolina.

The 10:23 p.m. quake in Edgefield, S.C., near Augusta, measured 4.1 on the Richter scale and reportedly was felt from North Carolina to Alabama.

Carolyn Mitchell was watching TV with her husband when noticed figurines on a bookshelf start shaking.

"We were watching a movie and my husband paused it and said, ‘Did you feel that?' At that time I hadn't felt anything," she said. "We wondered if a very large tree had fallen."

Melanie Walburg thought her mind was playing tricks on her.

"The couch starting shaking. [I] wasn't sure if it was real or if I'd lost my mind," she said.

Friday's earthquake was centered about 7 miles west-northwest of Edgefield, some 20 miles north of Augusta.

A small quake measuring 3.2 that followed on Sunday was also in the same area, according to geophysicist Paul Caruso with the U.S. Geological Survey.

Dawson County Emergency Services Chief Lanier Swafford said no damage was reported locally.

DCN regional staff contributed to this story.
