Baseball Tigers win first game

POSTED: March 3, 2009 4:50 p.m.

It was very cold last Monday as the Tigers played host to Gilmer County High School. Despite the wind and frigid temperatures, Dawson rallied to take an 8-4 victory over the Bobcats. It was the first game of the season for both teams.

Gilmer jumped out to a 3-0 lead early. The Tigers rallied behind a big hit from Chase Williams to drive in two runs and give Dawson a 7-4 lead late.

The Tigers started Ren Buttram on the mound. Buttram pitched into the third inning giving up only one unearned run. Williams came on in relieve and gave up two more unearned runs. Chase Gilreath came in to close the last two innings with scoreless baseball.

Defense was a major concern in the game as Dawson committed six errors that lead to four unearned runs.

Cody Marshall went 2-for-2 at the plate with one RBI.

Olin Bearden also had a big day offensively with two hits in four at-bats. Both hits were doubles.

Last Friday's game with Forsyth Central was rained out and will be made up at a later date.

Thursday, Dawson will travel to Toccoa to take on the Stephens County Indians.

The Indians were AAA state runners-up last year to Cartersville.

Indian, Ethan Martin, was drafted in the first round by the Los Angeles Dodgers last year.

His brother, Cody, is a member of this year's team and could possibly also be drafted by a major league team.
