Meeting aims to encourage running for office

POSTED: February 5, 2014 4:00 a.m.

With the 2014 elections getting closer and closer, a group of Dawson County residents are calling together a meeting to help spread information about running for office.

On Feb. 10, the Dawson County Republican Party will be holding a community-wide information program at the Bowen Center for the Arts.

The meeting aims to encourage residents to run for office if they are interested, as well as inform voters of new deadlines this year.

The meeting is scheduled to run from 6 to 7:15 p.m.

"Soon, those of you who are responsible citizens will begin receiving prerecorded phone calls from candidates and their supporters asking for your vote, and your mailbox, well, it will begin to fill up mailers from candidates asking for your vote, too," said party chairwoman Linda Umberger.

This year, Umberger wants to make voters aware of the change in a few policies.

"Instead of waiting until summer to cast your vote in the Primary Election, early voting will begin April 28, at the Board of Elections and Registration and Primary Election Day will be May 20," she said.

"Additionally, the qualifying period will be earlier. It will be from Monday, March 3, 9 a.m. until Friday, March 7, noon, at the Dawson County Board of Elections and our great Capitol depending on the elected position for which you wish to qualify."

Umberger said that the program is intended to be nonpartisan and that all are encouraged to attend.

"It is open to Republicans, Libertarians, Democrats and Independents, any and all who have an interest in making their community an even better place to live," she said.

"Come and find out more reasons why it's worth the effort to get involved and consider running for office."

Guest speakers will include Glenda Ferguson, Bill Saling and Jim King, who will be on hand to share information about running for public office.

Light refreshments will be available.

For more information about the event, call Umberger at (770) 853-9922.
