ASK THE EXPERTS

Dawson County Schools closed Thursday

Many roads remain hazardous

POSTED: January 29, 2014 2:20 p.m.

With the moisture on area roads expected to freeze again overnight Wednesday, Dawson County School Superintendent Keith Porter has canceled classes for students and staff on Thursday.

All after-school activities and athletics for Thursday are also cancelled.

Snowfall reports in Dawson County vary from 1.5 to 3 inches.

Early Wednesday, Dawson County Emergency Services Chief Lanier Swafford said road conditions have improved but many remain "treacherous."

DOT crews have been out and progress is being made, but all roads still have some snow and ice accumulations.

Swafford encourages everyone to stay home if at all possible.

Emergency personnel worked throughout the night and responded to numerous wrecks.

"There were no serious injuries. We did have some minor injuries, a few that we treated and some that we transported," Swafford said.

Dawson County Sheriff's spokesman Maj. Tony Wooten said while some of the county's roads are dry and appear safe for travel, the issue will be tonight when the roads where the ice has melted refreezes.

"We have so many roads out there that are blocked by trees on both sides and the ice hasn't melted at all," he said. "And any roads that have melted are going to freeze again this evening when the sun goes down."

His advice: "Stay home and off the roads."

For those who must drive, Swafford urges extreme caution and offers the following tips.

"Make sure your gas tank is full and you have water, food and blankets in the vehicle," he said. "This is a serious weather event and should not be taken lightly."
