For the past few weeks, Dawson County elementary and middle schools have been testing their students' knowledge of words and spelling.

Students spelled words pulled from the dictionary to compete against each other in each school's local Spelling Bee.

Over the course of the first two weeks of January, students at each elementary school in the county lined up to compete in classrooms, then in the media center, to find the school's best spellers.

The best speller and alternate from each school then moved on to the District Spelling Bee at Dawson County Middle School set for today.

"I feel excited to go on to the county level," said Black's Mill Elementary winner Juliana Hart. "I actually only studied once after school and then just went up there. I was very confident, though."

The district bee, which was originally scheduled for Wednesday, will be held at a later date due to inclement weather.

District spellers will move on to compete in the Georgia Association of Educators State Spelling Bee, which will be held at 11 a.m. March 21 at the Georgia State University Student Center in Atlanta.
