ASK THE EXPERTS

Driver identified in fatal wreck

Man reportedly hit patch of ice

POSTED: January 29, 2014 4:00 a.m.

Ice on Shoal Creek Road in Dawsonville played a role in the Monday morning death of a Dahlonega man.

Authorities said Miles Albert Carney, 21, died after the 2006 Nissan Frontier he was driving reportedly hit a patch of ice before careening down an embankment and into a tree at about 7:45 a.m.

"Ice was most definitely a factor," said Georgia State Patrol spokeswoman Robin Stone.

"He left the roadway and then down the east shoulder about 63 feet before striking several small trees with the driver's side door. He then continued and struck a large tree."

Stone said Carney was wearing a seatbelt.

He was pronounced dead on scene by Dawson County Coroner Ted Bearden.

According to Dawson County Emergency Services Chief Lanier Swafford, there were numerous reports of ice on Shoal Creek Road and three wrecks in the area early Monday, following light rain overnight and freezing temperatures at daybreak.

The road was shut down until crews could move the wreckage and the ice melted.

The single-vehicle wreck is the first fatality on the roads of 2014 in Dawson County.
