Numerous roads deemed 'treacherous'

Emergency personnel warns against travel

A winter weather system that moved into the area Tuesday, bringing snow and freezing rain, shut down schools and hindered travel. Dawson County was expecting as much as an inch of snow and temperatures well below freezing. School Superintendent Keith Porter said he was monitoring the situation throughout Tuesday and a decision about classes today would be made as soon as possible. Check dawsonnews.com for updates.

Dawson County Emergency Services is cautioning motorists to stay off local roads, as many have become "treacherous."

The following roads are deemed hazardous: 400 north and southbound north of Harmony Church Road, Kilough Church Road, Lumpkin Campground Road, Hwys. 136, 183 and 9 south from Dawson Forest to the Forsyth County line.

Emergency personnel warns: "If you must, travel with caution, otherwise stay home."

Wrecks have been reported at Hwy. 53 east of Hwy. 183 and at Dawson Forest Road and Ga. 400. There is also a wreck on Howser Mill Road, Blue Ridge Overlook and a rollover collision near the 6900 block of Elliott Family Parkway.

Blue Ridge Overlook, near its intersection with War Hill Park Road, is near impassable, authorities said.

There was also a wreck on Hwy. 53 West at Sweetwater Juno Road.

Numerous jack-knifed tractor trailers have also been reported on Hwy. 52 West toward Gilmer County.
