Up to an inch of snow predicted

Arctic blast could include sleet, freezing rain

POSTED: January 28, 2014 10:41 a.m.

Forecasters are now saying Dawson County could get up to an inch of snow today.

A National Weather Service briefing with local emergency personnel Tuesday morning indicated that snow predications for Dawson County have been increased overnight to 1 inch and could possibly include some sleet and freezing rain.

Dawson County Emergency Services Chief said the snow is predicted to be "a dry snow."

"Temperatures will be falling throughout the day with lows Wednesday morning in the mid to low teens and wind chills approaching 0. A Wind Chill Advisory may be issued later today," he said.

There have already been reports of snow and sleet west of Dawsonville and in higher elevations.

Flurries were also falling in downtown Dawsonville by mid-morning.

Dawson County School Superintendent Keith Porter announced early this morning that schools are closed today for students and staff.

All extra-curricular activities planned for this afternoon are also cancelled.

"Updates will follow as conditions continue to develop," Swafford said.

He cautions residents to "make plans now."

"Prepare for power outages, leave faucets dripping, provide for pets and livestock and use extreme caution with portable heaters, wood burning fireplaces and heaters and portable generators," he said.

The snow should be gone by Wednesday, with a high of 37 degrees in the forecast, but there is a 20 percent chance of snow, mainly before 8 a.m.
