Arctic blast could bring a half inch of snow Tuesday

POSTED: January 27, 2014 5:44 p.m.

A winter weather system moving in tonight could produce up to a half inch of snow in Dawson County on Tuesday.

The National Weather Service in Peachtree City has issued a "hazardous weather outlook" that says that the combination of wind and cold temperatures will drop wind chills to 10 degrees or below for much of north Georgia.

"Graphs put the greatest chance of snowfall between the hours of 7 a.m. and 3 p.m. tomorrow. But that could change," said Dawson County Emergency Services Chief Lanier Swafford. "Being on the edge of the line from lesser to greater accumulation means that amounts could vary - lesser or greater depending on where the cold meets the moist."

The Arctic blast is expected to move into the region overnight Monday. Current models show the greatest chance of significant accumulation in areas of metro Atlanta and points farther south.

The forecast also calls for a 40 percent chance of snow and sleet Tuesday night.

Swafford said the emergency officials will continue to monitor the situation for changing conditions.

"Another briefing is scheduled for 9 a.m. tomorrow and information will follow that or sooner if available," he said.

At this time no delays or cancelations have been announced.

Conditions are expected to improve past Tuesday, with the high temperature steadily rising to 49 by Friday.

Also, sunny skies are expected through the rest of the week.
