Board opposes request

Couple seeking city annexation

POSTED: January 22, 2014 4:00 a.m.

When the Easons moved into the Gold Creek subdivision in 2012, the couple thought they were buying a house in the Dawsonville city limits.

"I prefer smaller government. I have nothing against the county, but when you're in a smaller city, you get to have more of a voice," Michael Eason said.

Last month, the Easons filed a petition to have their lot on Gold Bullion West annexed into the city, a request the Dawson County commission opposed in a 3-0 vote Thursday. District 3 Commissioner Jimmy Hamby was unable to attend the meeting.

District 1 Commissioner Gary Pichon made the motion to deny the request, stating the annexation does not meet the county's zoning criteria and violates a 2007 sales tax agreement between the two governments that dictates the area in which properties can be annexed.

District 2 Commissioner James Swafford clarified their objection.

"No. 1, it doesn't fit the land-use plan and, No. 2, it goes against our agreements with the city as far as services," he said.

Eason, however, said the annexation makes sense.

"We are adjacent to the city and the last house not in the city from Burt Creek [Road]. We're surrounded by the city, so we think we ought to be part of the city," he said.

The matter now shifts to the Dawsonville City Council, with the first hearing set for Feb. 3 and a second March 3.
