JV Girls extend record to 8-1

POSTED: January 21, 2014 4:13 p.m.

The Dawson County High School Junior Varsity girls basketball team extended its record to 8-1 with two wins last week.

The team traveled to Oakwood to face West Hall on Jan. 14. The Lady Tigers jumped out to an 18-7 advantage after two quarters of play. Dawson County continued the pressure in the second half to come away with a 40-20 win over the Lady Spartans.

"I am very pleased to have a team in which every player gives her best effort and contributes to the success of the team," said coach Anne Hyams.

Nine different Dawson County players scored. The team was led by Lauren Burgess with seven points. Also contributing to the scoring were: Brittany Griggs, Eliza Sillesky and Emily Queen with six points; Katelynn Simpson and Ava Walker with four points each; Cassie McPherson added three points and Belle Queen and Tatum Pruitt with two points each.

"All players are contributing offensively and look for their shots first, but are quick to provide an assist if there is a higher percentage shot available. Every player on the team can score, which makes it difficult for our opponents to focus primarily on a few key players or a specific inside or outside game," Hyams said.

On Jan. 17 the team went on the road again to Blue Ridge to face the Lady Rebels of Fannin County.

The Lady Tigers started the game strong and took a 28-8 lead into the locker room after two quarters of play.

The defense continued to play well and held the Lady Rebels to only five second half points and an easy 53-13 win.

Eliza Sillesky had a huge game offensively with 15 points. Seven other Lady Tigers scored; including, Burgess-nine, Belle Queen-eight, Pruitt-seven, Simpson and Emily Queen-five each, Heather Brady-three and McPherson contributed one point.

The Lady Tigers will play at East Hall High School at 4 p.m. on Friday.
