Pain leads team over East Hall

POSTED: January 7, 2014 4:34 p.m.

Lucas Pain had a monster night on offense for the Dawson County High School varsity boys' basketball team Jan. 3 in Dawsonville.

The Tigers came out on top of East Hall with a final score of 60-50.

Pain had a game-high 20 points for Head Coach Thad Burgess' team. The game saw seven different Tigers in the scoring column.

Dawson County used its defense to open up a 13-7 first quarter lead in front of an energized student section. The Tigers kept up the defensive intensity in the second quarter and extended the team's lead to 28-18 at halftime.

The Tiger match zone held Coach Joe Dix's East Hall team to just 50 points for a team that had been averaging 72.5 points over its first eight games of the season.

Dawson County's offense continued to work on all cylinders in the second half and scored 32 points to take the 10-point victory.

With the win, Dawson moved to 12-3 on the year and more importantly 3-1 in Region 7-AAA play.

East Hall is now 4-5 overall and 1-2 in region action.

"It was a big night for our basketball program," Burgess said. "There was a great crowd, it was an intense game, and our guys played so well. We got in foul trouble early and got some key minutes from our reserve players. Our defense, rebounding and the ability to handle their pressure were huge keys in our win.

"Over the last five games, I have seen a fire and determination of winning from this new group of faces that are playing really well together. I think having a few days off during the break allowed us to handle their (East Hall) pressure," he added.

Also scoring for Dawson County were: Cameron Millholland - 11, Sam Muenchen - nine, Brandon Abbott - eight, Levi Whitmire - seven, Jackson Putnam - four and Terrell Dawson scored two points.

Leading the Vikings in scoring was Keeven Davenport with 17 points.

Up next for the Tigers will be a home game with North Hall on Friday in Dawsonville. Tip-off will be at 8:30 p.m. for the Region 7-AAA match-up.
