Fred Sartin

Fred Sartin, 84, of Dawsonville, died Dec. 21, 2013.

Born Sept. 23, 1929 in Cairo to the late Samuel and Essie Sartin, he lived in Dawson County for the past six years, having moved from Mobile, Ala.

At an early age his family moved to Seattle, Wash., and then to Mobile, where he graduated from Murphy High School.

He then attended Marion Military Institute until he transferred to the United States Military Academy at West Point.

After graduating he entered the U.S. Army as a commissioned officer and served during the Korean Conflict, where he was awarded the Bronze Star.

After serving in the Army he returned to Mobile and was employed a number of years by Alabama Power.

Mr. Sartin was a former president of the Jaycees and served as president of the Junior Miss America Pageant.

Fred then moved to Hilton Head, S.C. where he worked as a real estate agent and broker and was instrumental in the development of that area.

He then returned to Mobile where he worked until his retirement in hotel management.

He was an active member of Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church.

His three sisters and four brothers preceded him in death.

Survivors include his wife, Charlotte Sartin of Dawsonville; children, Martha Patorgis of Alpharetta, Fred Sartin Jr. of Suwanee, Gray Sartin of Lawrenceville, Elizabeth Paige of Dawsonville, Paul Hamm of Wilmer, Ala., Patricia Beckish, Laura Wyers, both of Mobile, Ala.; 10 grandchildren; two great-grandsons; various other relatives also survive.

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Dec. 29 at Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church with the Revs. Andrew Harwood, Alton Moore and Emory Brackman officiating.

In lieu of flowers, donations are requested made to Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church, 1751 Wesley Chapel Rd., Dahlonega, GA 30533.

Bearden Funeral Home of Dawsonville is in charge of the arrangements.
