Tigers baseball season opens

POSTED: February 24, 2009 4:00 p.m.

Even though there was a chance of snow last weekend, spring sports are beginning to start at Dawson County High School.

This week marks the opening of the 2009 baseball season.

The Tigers played their first game of the season Monday at home against Gilmer County High School. Results were not available as of press time.

Head Coach Jimmy Pruett will have his hands full this season.

Pruett must replace five starters due to graduation. Pruett will rely heavily on the pitching of Ren Buttram, Jacob Barr and Chase Gilreath.

Buttram, a Kennesaw State signee, will be the ace of the staff.

Buttram posted a 5-2 record last year with a 2.31 ERA. Buttram will also be an asset on offense. Last year he belted six homeruns.

Beside Buttram, the Tigers will rely deeply on the bats of second baseman Barr (.389 average and 2 homeruns), shortstop Gilreath, catcher Kaleb Kicklighter, first baseman Caleb Holbrook and third baseman Chase Williams.

Last season, despite a 17-10 overall record, the Tigers came up short of qualifying for a state tournament bid.

In 2007 Dawson reached the second round of state. In order for them to return to the state scene, the arms of Buttram, Gilreath and Barr must avoid injury.

The Tigers will be back in action Friday, as the team plays host to Forsyth Central at 5:30 p.m.
