The varsity wrestling team traveled to Lumpkin County on Dec. 3 and competed against Commerce and Riverside Military Academy.

Coach Arron Haynes' team defeated Riverside, 57-21, before losing to state power Commerce, 58-18.

"Commerce is a very good, physical team that will push for a state title," Haynes said. "We saw no quit in our boys who wrestled multiple time individual state champions like they were any other wrestler."

Haynes said that the team from Riverside is also much improved this year.

"Riverside is a much improved team from last season. We saw a lot of improvement from our young wrestlers, while our veterans continued to lead on the mat," he said.

Justin Evans (113), Zach Guy (160) and Brett Whalen (182) each picked up two wins for the match.

"It was great for our whole program with most of our junior varsity wrestlers getting three matches each as they prepare to take a bigger role on the varsity mat," Haynes said.

On Dec. 7 the wrestling team competed in the King of the Mountain tournament at Towns County High School.

The Tigers finished in second place as a team just behind champion Banks County. Coming in third place was White County.

Capturing championships in their respective weight classes were: Justin Evans (113) and Gavin Brown (195). Gilbert Pruitt (152) captured a second place medal. Finishing in third place were Josh Poe (106) and Quade Buytendorp (120). Taking fourth place was Coty Greer (145).

The team will be back in action on Saturday with the Rumble on the Ridge tournament at Fannin County. Matches will begin at 9 a.m.
