Dozens of volunteers from area churches, civic groups and youth organizations served up several hundred meals during the Community Thanksgiving Dinner.

Organized by the local Alliance of Churches, the fourth annual event was held Nov. 27 at the Lakeview Center.

"We had fantastic turnout from our volunteers," said David Jordan, pastor at Grace Presbyterian Church. "Everyone around here has such a giving and compassionate spirit that you never have any trouble getting people to help.

"We're just bursting at the seams with people willing to serve, and that's a wonderful thing."

Designed for those who found themselves alone for the holiday or couldn't afford to travel to be with family, the full-course meal was free to all.

Sharon Cheek, who brought her young son and two granddaughters, was appreciative.

"I'm not usually out asking for handouts, but I have to for my kids and grandkids to take care of," she said. "I'm in a hardship right now. I don't usually do stuff like this, but I'm glad I did. I'm enjoying it. The kids are enjoying it. I appreciate it."

Cheek also enjoyed the gospel and bluegrass music performed by local group Crossroads.

"Being able to sing the gospel music is giving me chills, because I'm not used to this," she said.

In all, more than 330 meals were served. In addition, a couple dozen pans of the holiday fare were taken to the sheriff's office and area fire stations for those who had to work over the holiday weekend.
