Late rally falls short

POSTED: December 3, 2013 3:14 p.m.

The Riverview Middle School seventh grade boys basketball team tried to use a fourth quarter rally to pull out a win over Jasper Middle School Nov. 19.

The team fell short and came out on the losing side of the 29-17 score.

Trailing 27-9 entering the final six minutes, the Eagles outscored the Dragons 8-2, but fell short.

Riverview was behind 11-9 at halftime before Jasper used a 16-0 run in the third quarter to build a 27-9 advantage.

Seven different Eagles scored. The team was led by Chase Walls with five points.

"We played well in the first half, and I felt like we ran our offense well," said head coach Steven London. "Coming out after halftime, they (Jasper) were able to capture the momentum and our shooters went cold."

The Eagles were cold from the free throw line. The team converted just 4 of 18 shots from the charity stripe.

"We played well defensively most of the game and rebounded the ball well, but we didn't capitalize on the mistakes they made in the second half. I was proud of the overall effort of the boys," he said. "We must take advantage of our shooting opportunities and maintain our composure when under pressure. We will definitely focus on our shooting during practice."

In addition to Walls, also scoring for the Eagles were: Eric Pope with four points; Raleigh Payne, Reed Glaze and Carlos Keller with two points each and Jared Posey scored one point.

The Eagles will travel to take on the Dawson County Middle School Tigers at 4 p.m. Dec. 6.
