ASK THE EXPERTS

Eagles have tough week

POSTED: November 19, 2013 4:20 p.m.

It was a tough week for the Riverview Middle School seventh grade boys basketball team. The Eagles dropped a 45-24 loss to Pickens Middle on Nov. 14 and lost 38-25 at Lumpkin on Nov. 16.

Pickens jumped out to a 6-0 lead with four minutes left in the first quarter.

Eagle Chase Walls then nailed a three-pointer that cut the Dragon lead in half. The score ignited the Riverview offense and sent the game into halftime tied at 16.

Riverview and Pickens both converted on offense in the third quarter with the Eagles trailing 27-24.

The Dragons then used a full-court press in the fourth quarter that caused Riverview to turn the ball over several times.

"We could not gain our composure and Pickens was able to run away with the game as they made their shots down the stretch," said Head Coach Steven London.

"I was proud of the way our kids played. They never gave up and fought hard the entire game. We were in the game going into the fourth quarter, but Pickens was able to capitalize on some mistakes we made. We have to work on playing smart basketball, not forcing passes under pressure. We will work on those things in practice and continue to get better. We have an opportunity later in the season to play them again, and hopefully we will be able to put a complete game together against them at home," he said.

Carlos Keller, Chase Walls and Eric Pope had six points each in the loss.

Saturday's game at Lumpkin was a nail-biter. The Eagles kept the score close, but were never able to capture the lead. The team lost 38-25, as the game got away in the fourth quarter.

Reed Glaze led the Eagles in scoring with five points. He was joined in the scoring column by Chase Walls, Eric Pope and Xavier Sanchez with four points each. Dakota Walls and Raleigh Payne scored two points each.

The Eagles will play next on Friday at home against Clear Creek Middle School. Tip-off is set for 4 p.m.
