Dawson County resident Karen Armstrong has announced her candidacy for the 2014 Board of Education.

Armstrong is running for District 3's position, currently held by longtime member Cecil Bennett, who has served intermittently on the school board for the past 20 years.

"I can guarantee you that I will give you 100 percent. I can also guarantee you that you will be proud of me as the next Dawson County District 3 Board of Education member," she said.

As part of her campaign, Armstrong pledges to be conscientious of how she would spend taxpayer money for the school system by creating "public awareness of fiscal responsibility, thereby, benefiting the community, students and school system's staff."

Armstrong, a native of north Georgia, is currently employed as the administration officer at UNG Military Science Department.

She previously held the position as the assistant registrar at the Dawson County Board of Elections.

She has held numerous volunteer positions, such as PTSO President for Dawson County Middle School, a founding member of Dawson County High School PTSO in 2009 and an overall PTSO member since 2006.

Armstrong and her husband Timothy have two children, Gunnar, a freshman at UNG, and Summer, a junior at Dawson County High School.

As of press time, neither incumbent Bennett nor at-large member Will Wade have made any comments regarding their decisions for next year's elections.

Qualifying for election is tentatively set for March 3-7, with the primary scheduled for May 20. The general elections is tentatively scheduled for Nov. 4, 2014.
