POSTED: October 8, 2013 4:59 p.m.

The Dawson County High School boys cross country team competed at the Mountain Invitational Meet at Unicoi State Park Oct. 3 in Helen.

Dylan Forester led the boys with a seventh place finish overall out of 185 runners on the rugged course. Forester crossed the finish line with a time of 16:44.

Winning the varsity boys race was Bryce Schuebert from North Hall with a time of 16:15. Runner-up went to Ryan Peppenhorst from South Forsyth with a time of 16:16.

Dawson County finished in 14th place out of 27 teams in the prestigious event. The Tigers accumulated 357 team points.

Collecting points for Dawson were: Avery Cowart (18:03), Brandon Barker (18:55), Armando Jimenez (18:58), Mason Carr (19:32), Ben Umberger and Cole Simmons.

North Hall took the team championship with 55 points. Finishing in second was South Forsyth with 96 points and third was West Forsyth with 139 points.

The junior and middle school boys also raced in the event.

The junior varsity boys finished in eighth place out of 20 teams. Bryan Colin had the best showing with a 19th place finish out of 238 runners. Colin posted a time of 19:21.

Tigers Ben Drew (20:15), Garrett Carlisle (20:32), Ethan Cowart (21:03), Chris Lafontaine (21:10), Andrew Hafermalz (21:57) and Drew Keller (22:07) also contributed toward the team's score.

Also competing for the junior varsity boys were: Rhys Adams, Tucker Stowers, Tyler Butler and Justin Posey.

Christopher Shelp from the middle school had a great performance. He finished in third place out of 267 middle school runners. Shelp crossed the finish line with a time of 11:41.

Cody Wood, Nathan Sorrells, Jacob Sinclair, Hunter Voyles, Jared Posey and Derek Chambers helped the Tigers to a ninth place team finish out of 19 teams.

"Our boys really stepped up to the plate and raced touch and aggressively. Rather than falling back on the defensive like I've seen in some of their other races," said head coach Charles Beusse.

"I thought Avery Cowart ran one of the best races of his life, moving up steadily in the final mile. Brandon Barker and Armando Jimenez also held tough and ran under 19 minutes for the first time of their careers. Ben Umberger and Mason Carr also stepped up to help fill some gaps on the varsity squad," Beusse said.
