Four injured when SUVs collide on 400

POSTED: October 2, 2013 4:00 a.m.

Four people were injured Thursday afternoon in a two-vehicle wreck that shut down southbound traffic on Ga. 400 in Dawson County for nearly an hour.

According to the Georgia State Patrol, 39-year-old Arch Morgan of Lawrenceville and Nancy Smith, age not listed, of Flowery Branch were both thrown from a Jeep Cherokee during the crash, which occurred about 3 p.m. at Industrial Park Road.

Morgan was flown to Atlanta Medical Center in serious condition with what were described as chest injuries. His condition as of Tuesday afternoon could not be confirmed.

Smith was treated at the scene, as were the driver and passenger of a Ford Expedition that collided with the Jeep, which was driven by 37-year-old Stephanie Johnson, according to the state patrol

Johnson reportedly pulled onto Ga. 400 and into the path of the Expedition driven by Susan Dye, 49, of Dawsonville.

Her 26-year-old passenger, Taylor Dye, also of Dawsonville, was later taken to an area hospital for additional treatment, according to the state patrol.

Both Morgan and Smith were later cited for not wearing seatbelts.

Johnson, who reportedly told troopers she was attempting to turn right onto Ga. 400 from Industrial Park Road, was also cited in the wreck for failing to yield when entering the busy highway.

"The investigating trooper observed evidence that indicated [Johnson] was crossing the southbound lanes of ... 400 and not turning right as indicated in statements," said GSP spokeswoman Robin Stone.

Considered one of the most dangerous intersections in Dawson County, the Industrial Park Road-Ga. 400 crossing was redesigned several years ago with a concrete median that does not allow drivers to cross the busy highway.
