Middle school team wins close one

POSTED: September 24, 2013 4:00 p.m.

Dawson County's middle school football program upped its record to 2-1 with a nail-biting 7-6 win over Clear Creek Middle School last week in Ellijay.

Head Coach Benjie Edwards' team currently sports a second seed going into this week's North Georgia Mountain League playoffs. The Tigers will be matched up once again with Clear Creek on Thursday at Riverview Middle School.

Kick off will be at 5 p.m. Clear Creek is the No. 3 seed.

The other semi-final game will be No. 1 seed, Pickens Middle School, playing at No. 4 seed Fannin Middle School.

"We did not hold back and we are excited about playing them again. It will be another great game. We need to make some adjustments on both sides of the ball this week at practice," Edwards said.

The Sept. 19 game was a defensive battle. Dawson posted the only score in the second quarter by Coey Watson. Watson took a pitch and scampered left then cut across the field to stiff arm two Clear Creek defenders to score from 45-yards out.

Frankie Muldoon added the extra point, which turned out to be the deciding factor in the victory.

Clear Creek didn't let down and took the ensuing kickoff 40-yards for a touchdown.

The Bobcats attempted a 2-point conversion. The Tiger defense held strong and stopped the Clear Creek offense.

Both teams battled in the second half.

Tiger Cullen Reed came up with a huge interception and Taylor Swofford recovered a fumble to stop drives by Clear Creek.

The Bobcats made one final offensive drive that took the ball inside the Tigers 15-yard line where once again Edwards' defense held and forced a turnover on downs.
