Library plans night of fun

POSTED: September 25, 2013 4:00 a.m.

The Dawson County public library is offering the community a night of fun, frights and festivities as it begins a new event.

The inaugural campfire story concert will start at 7:30 p.m. Saturday in the field behind the library. The event will kick off not only the fall activities at the library, but also the new outdoor area.

"Home Depot donated and built a wonderful fire pit in the field behind the library," said Tracy Walker, youth services coordinator. "We hope to expand on our outdoor programming offerings, as well. "

The night will begin with songs from Dahlonega musician Lara Polangco, who will be playing from 7:30 to 8 p.m.

The stories will begin with Georgia storytellers Betsy Doty, Debbie Weston From and Anthony Vinson.

"They are all members of the Southern Order of Storytellers - one of our sponsors for the evening," Walker said.

After the crowd is warmed up, Sherry Norfolk, a nationally renowned storyteller that has shared stories in schools, festivals and libraries all over the U.S, will take her turn.

"Sherry is known for her wonderful and expressive voice, which makes her ghost stories some of the best in the country," Walker said.

Norfolk has also served as the president of the National Storytelling Network.

"We will have some hay bales available for sitting, but if people want to bring their own lawn chairs or blankets, that's wonderful," Walker said. "The Dawson County Woman's Club is donating the fixings for s'mores, as well."

The free event is sponsored by the Southern Order of Storytellers, McEver Signs, the Dawson County Women's Club and Chestatee Regional Library System.

Because the tales are intended to scare for fun, the library is recommending no children younger than the age of 8 attend the story time.
