Relay for Life event kicks off this week

POSTED: September 18, 2013 4:00 a.m.

With 2013's Relay for Life complete, Dawson County is gearing up for the 2014 American Cancer Society fundraiser.

The Dawson County Relay for Life team will be holding its 2014 kickoff at 6 p.m. Thursday at the Dawson County Board of Education Professional Development Center.

The event will begin the fundraising leading up to 2014's Relay for Life, which will be held April 25 at Veteran's Memorial Park.

This year's theme will be "A Carnival of Hope."

"The theme was voted on by the Dawson County planning commission for Relay for Life," said Beth Covington, event chair for Dawson County Relay for Life. "Each year's theme is decided locally."

Last year's Relay in Dawson County raised nearly $50,000 for cancer research.

"We're hoping to get a really big turn out this year," Covington said. "We're actually doing something special this month to get people excited and volunteering."

The special offer for Dawson County is half-price registration.

"Usually, our registration fee is $10. For the month of September, we're only charging $5," Covington said. "We're really hoping it will increase registration numbers."
