ASK THE EXPERTS

Library begins fall with authors, spooky stories

POSTED: September 18, 2013 4:00 a.m.

The Dawson County public library is offering several events for readers of all ages.

Join award-winning author Lola Schaefer starting at 10 a.m. Saturday as she covers the 10 questions you need to ask before writing nonfiction.

The author of "Arrow Hawk" and "Look Behind," as well as "Frankie Stein and the Mittens" series, will guide children grades 3 through 6 through the fun and fascinating world of nonfiction.

This program is free and space is limited, so call the library to reserve your place.

The week after, come back to the library from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Sept. 28 for a book signing with local author Anne Dismukes Amerson for her new book "Dahlonega, Georgia; Site of America's First Major Gold Rush."

Amerson is the author of several books on Dahlonega and a long-time columnist for her local newspaper. She was also the first recipient of the Historical Society's Madeleine K. Anthony Award and was named one of 11 "Humanities Heroes" from around the state to receive the Governor's Award in the Humanities.

She lives with her husband, Amos, in Dahlonega.

After hearing stories of gold and riches, stick around for an event that will give you shivers and goose bumps. The first annual Campfire Concert will be at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 28.

Join your friends and fellow readers around the campfire in the field behind the library for good, old-fashioned jump stories, music, s'mores and lots of fun. Famous storyteller Sherry Norfolk will headline the evening, joined by three of Georgia's favorite tellers.

"I've heard lots of people tell ghost stories, and nobody tells them better than Sherry," said Tracy Walker, youth services specialist for the Dawson County Library. "We're so excited about this new family event at the library."

Walker said the whole family is invited, but because the tales are of the spooky variety, the library is recommending the stories for ages 8 and up.

The free event is sponsored by the Southern Order of Storytellers, McEver Signs, the Dawson County Women's Club and Chestatee Regional Library System.

For more information on any of these events, visit the library's website at www.chestateelibrary.org or call (706) 344-3690.
